Chris Perkins, BSc.(Hons) PGCE (Oxon) and Nuala Taylor, BEd (Hons) are experienced teachers and tutors who work together to prepare students for the 11+ entrance exams. Each teacher teaches their specialist subject. Nuala provides 11 Plus Tuition in English and Chris teaches the Maths.

Chris was Head of Chemistry at Plymstock School in Plymouth for 10 years, until January 2011. Previously he was a Chemistry Teacher and the Head of Lower School Science at Kelly College Independent School. Since January 2011, he has been self-employed as both a Professional Tutor and also a Professional Drummer! Moreover, Chris has been teaching Key Stage 3 in Plymouth since 1994. He therefore has a good understanding of the level mathematical ability expected of the most able Year 7 students when they begin Secondary School. Chris is married with two children and his daughter attended DHSG.

Nuala graduated from the University of London with a B.Ed(Hons) in Primary Education. She subsequently worked as a primary teacher in Hertfordshire, before spending some time lecturing English at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. Back in England, Nuala taught GCSE and A-level English as Head of Sixth at Notre Dame School. As a result of this, Nuala has an excellent knowledge of the English requirements at Key Stage 3.

Both teachers are trained in Child Protection and Safeguarding and have fully enhanced DBS certificates and Public Liability Insurance.

making good progress…

Eleven plus tuition and Grammar School Education in Plymouth is really rewarding for able students and we hope to get the chance to show you what the schools are looking for.

Chris and Nuala are both very experienced, well resourced and knowledgable teachers. They can therefore offer good quality 11 Plus Tuition for small groups of Year 5 students. The group number this year will be limited to just 4 students, due to social distancing considerations. There will only be 2 sessions running this year on a Saturday morning: the first from 9am and the second from 10.30am. Sessions will alternate weekly between English and Maths. There are only 8 places available, so it is important to book your place as early as possible.

  • Firstly, this is a great opportunity for children to prepare for the 11 Plus in Plymouth with the support of experienced teachers.
  • Secondly, boys and girls are taught together as the exams for the three Plymouth grammar schools are now the same.
  • Thirdly, we find that small groups support each other and work together with a shared purpose.
  • Moreover, the small group helps the children to become more confident.
  • Finally, we can provide specialist tuition. Both tutors have a lot of experience in their chosen subjects.

Information on school admissions can be found on the plymouth.gov.uk website. This is an invaluable resource.

Additionally, you can click the link below to find helpful information on the process of applying to take the 11 Plus. There is also a very helpful timeline of events. It is essential to be organised and this resource will be extremely useful.

There is more competition for Grammar School places now than ever before. Parents often feel they have nothing to lose by giving their child the opportunity to take the tests. The 11 Plus exams in Plymouth were brought forward to the September of Year 6 and so now there is less risk attached to the process.

The 11 Plus Tuition is focussed on improving reading skills, writing skills and story telling. It also helps to develop mathematical ability and problem solving. We would like to emphasise that whether the student gains entry to the schools or not, the process of tuition is very worthwhile. The Grammar School experience in Plymouth is certainly not suited to every student. In fact, a good Comprehensive School may be much more appropriate and rewarding in many cases. However, 11+ tuition improves basic skills which will benefit all students regardless of where they continue their education in Plymouth.

11+ Tuition & Fees

Weekly 60 minute sessions at £22.50, run from September until the end of December.
